{"id":6678,"date":"2022-11-15T11:07:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-15T09:07:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.coralynne.co.za\/blog\/?p=6678"},"modified":"2023-02-02T17:25:20","modified_gmt":"2023-02-02T15:25:20","slug":"dry-type-transformers-go-16-km-deep-in-sa-gold-mine-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coralynne.co.za\/blog\/dry-type-transformers-go-16-km-deep-in-sa-gold-mine-2\/","title":{"rendered":"DRY-TYPE TRANSFORMERS GO 1,6 KM DEEP IN SA GOLD MINE"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When dry-type transformer specialist Trafo Power Solutions was asked to supply three units to an underground South African gold mine, it was given a hill to climb in terms of design and logistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mine required the transformers to operate in the usual demanding conditions of dust, moisture and heat, says Trafo Power Solutions managing director David Claassen. However, there were a range of other challenges \u2013 not least the weight and height restrictions of a deep mine. While two of the transformers are relatively small \u2013 250 kVA and 630 kVA \u2013 the third is a substantial 3150 kVA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coralynne.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GOLD-MINE-PIC-02.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.coralynne.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GOLD-MINE-PIC-02-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"The dry-type transformers were designed in such a manner as to allow them to be transported in manageable components underground and reassembled.\" class=\"wp-image-6680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.coralynne.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GOLD-MINE-PIC-02-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.coralynne.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GOLD-MINE-PIC-02-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.coralynne.co.za\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/GOLD-MINE-PIC-02.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The dry-type transformers were designed in such a manner as to allow them to be transported in manageable components underground and reassembled. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe transformers are to operate at about 1km below surface, and will have to be transported through both an incline shaft and vertical shaft,\u201d says Claassen. \u201cEspecially with the larger unit, we had to work very closely with our Italian technology partner TMC to reach a design that could be moved within these constraints.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trafo Power Solutions also designed the enclosures locally, in a manner that would allow them to be transported in manageable components before being re-assembled underground. The enclosure design had to ensure that while dust and moisture were kept out, there was still enough air circulation to cool the unit. These factors contribute significantly towards total cost of ownership, which is of utmost importance to mining customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trafo Power Solutions also designed the specialised skid bases for the transformers, to facilitate moving the units to their operating destination. These accommodate the considerable weight of the units, particularly the 10-tonne mass of the large 3150 kVA unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Delivery of the transformers is expected to take place by the fourth quarter of 2022, with Trafo Power Solutions supervising the installation and commissioning process.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Getting three dry-type transformers 1,6 km underground at a South African mine recently posed a range of design and logistical challenges.
